The 3 H’s of Acting

I don’t know what it takes to make it in this business, because I haven’t. However, I’ve devised three indicators of what might be helpful to consider whenever you’re in a slump. I call it the “3 H’s” and without making a meal of it they are:

  • Hungry
  • Happy
  • Humble

Hungry means ambitious. It means going after it. It means wanting more. It means putting the work in.

Happy means finding joy in things, even if its just auditioning. Finding joy in your everyday life too. I think this is important because it feeds your ambition not diminishes it as so many people will try to persuade you. Have a life.

Humble means accepting that this is a bitch of a profession and no matter how special you think you are or how hard you’ve worked, that you must stay humble. Humility can feel counter to being Hungry, but if you pair them together they are powerful. Be hungry for more but accept with grace when it doesn’t come. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt but humility will keep you from becoming embittered and let you fight another day.
